When I sat down to binge-watch Emily In Paris on Netflix, I knew I was going to be in for some serious wanderlust. Paris has been on my travel list for a long time now, but *Tik Tok voice* it’s a pandemic. So while I can’t pack my bags and head to Paris anytime soon, I can wear some Emily In Paris inspired outfits and put my twist on them.
Dress like Emily In Paris, but Look Like You Sis
When I decide to try a new trend or borrow some inspiration, I have to put my twist on it. This means that I have to make it fit my style and my body type. I’d describe my style as “luxurious black girl on a budget” with a dash of “bad and bougie.” Put them together, and we can call it black and bougie (the inspiration behind my favorite Pinterest board that I’ve curated).
I wanted to borrow some of the elements of the looks I saw in Emily in Paris, and tweak it. Add some tweed, but style it with a figure-hugging look. Add a beret, but wear shades that match. Rock a trench coat for some Parisian flair, but get one with interesting details like leather side panels and top it off with thigh-high animal print boots.
It’s not Copy & Paste
Remember Emily’s look featuring a black and white checkered coat and red beret? I added my twist by styling a similar look with a basic black body-conscious jumpsuit. I opted for a longer tweed coat in a similar pattern and added red shades for that Je ne sais quoi (you know I had to work that phrase into this post lol).
That’s how you take a look and make it work for you. Take pieces of what you like, and tweak it so that it suits your style.
Emily In Paris also featured a lot of bold and colorful outfits. The best way to make those look for you is by paying attention to the fit and cut of the pieces you decide to wear. Style isn’t about having a copy & paste approach. It’s about your ability to express yourself and make things work for you.
For this look, I picked a $15 black and white tweed romper from Shein. I styled it with a black basic turtleneck, a black beret, bag, and heels. I also found some Fendi prints on inspired tights on Etsy (for $24.99!). The tights make the look fun and playful, without heavily competing for attention.
