I wanted to try doing a jumbo braid ponytail on my lace front wig (well technically, it has a frontal), and I’m so glad I did. Firstly, I want to see if I could pull it off before I attempt a traditional frontal ponytail (and buy a frontal and bundle). Secondly, it’s really inexpensive. If you already have traditional styling tools at home, you can pretty much get this look for about $6-$12 (the cost of the braiding hair. Thirdly, It’s pretty easy to do, and this is from someone who is still learning how to style their wigs well.

RPGShow Anthony Cuts037 Wig
The Anthony Cuts 037 wig from RPGShow is one of my fave wigs. It comes cut into a beautiful style, and I’ve had mine for over a year. I don’t wear it every day, but it is still in really good condition. It doesn’t shed much or anything like that. I plan to buy another one soon because the cut and the color are fire.
I apply my wigs with the BedHead Hardhead Hairspray.
Products Used For This Style:
Braiding Hair for jumbo braid ponytail
I used some pre-stretched braiding hair by Sensationnel, specifically the 48″ 2x pre-stretched braiding hair from their X-Pression collection ($5.99 a pack at my local beauty supply store). I used two colors: #27 and #613. It’s important to note that each brand (and honestly each collection) has a slightly different color for #613. I went based on what best matched the color of my RPGShow wig (which was the #613 from this collection)
I used 1 “bundle” of each color to make my braid and mixed them together. Because this is a blonde wig with highlights, I couldn’t find one color that was a spot-on match. Mixing #613 and #27 blended best. I will include Amazon links below, in case you can’t find them at your local BSS. Just bear in mind you only need 1 pack, and Amazon mainly has multipack deals.
Styling Tools
Nairobi Wrapping Foam
I use the Nairobi Wrapping Foam to set my part. Basically, I apply this to the top of my wig near the part area and then blowdry it to set it into place.
L’oreal Root Precision Touch Up Temporary Hair Color Concealer
Using a root touch-up pen can help really clean up your part. Arrogant Tae taught us.
Flat Iron
After setting the part in place, I flat iron my wig so I would have a smooth and sleek look. This is important as I really want it to blend well with my jumbo braid ponytail. I use a Babyliss Titanium Pro flat iron that I’d had for years. It’s the GOAT.
I do the comb and chase method to flat iron my hair, and I use a carbon comb that can withstand the heat.
Hot Comb
After I flat iron the wig, I use a hot comb to make the wig laid flatter and smoother. At this point, my wig is giving scalpiana.
Blonde Hair Elastics
I use blonde-tone hair elastics so that they blend with the color of my wig. If you’re using black hair or a dark color, I suggest you get hair ties that blend appropriately.
Honestly, I should have also bought some little clear hair elastics like these as well.
Wide Tooth Comb
To comb out my wig, and help smooth out the braiding hair.
