Have you ever gone to get dressed, look at your closet, and said: I have nothing to wear.
Chile, me too. I found out what the problem was, and I wouldn’t be the Style and Beauty Plug if I didn’t share it with my peoples.
This is why you have nothing to wear sis
The reason that you feel like you have nothing to wear, is because you don’t have enough basics. Think about it, when you go shopping what do you gravitate towards? For me at least, I know that when I go to the store I’m usually looking at what’s new and fun. I’m looking at different prints and patterns, new tops with interesting details, something that’ll snatch my waist and show off the booty. It’s rare that I make it a point to look at the basics unless I’m in Zara (because they have BOMB basics).
In order to maximize your wardrobe, you need to have enough basics to rotate with your other stuff to make more outfits. Think of your basics as the staple ingredients for making a cake. Without them, you won’t have much going on.
Here’s how to fix it
Next time you look in your closet, take a look, and see how many basics you have. Things like plain long sleeve t-shirts, turtlenecks, bodysuits, jeans in a plain wash without distressing, black pants, black leather pants, a black bodycon dress, a good faux leather jacket, black heels, nude heels, white sneakers, a black purse, etc.
While basics might not always seem like the most fun thing to shop for, there are some sexy options out there! Like the black deep v long sleeve jumpsuit, I’m wearing from Naked Wardrobe (it’s double-lined too!). They have some great jumpsuits and dresses that are basic, yet sexy. I decided to style it with this houndstooth jacket that I got on sale at Zara (I’ll link a similar option below), a black purse and heels, along with a red beret and red shades (gifted from Campbell Luxury) for a pop of color.
“Basic” is defined as an essential starting point or fundamental. Since this is a plain black jumpsuit, it’s a great starting point for any outfit. I can throw it on with heels and a statement jacket for a night out, or wear it with a denim jacket, cute bag, and white sneakers on a casual day.
Basics, give you more options. The key is to get some that are great quality (and they don’t have to be expensive. My go-to basic T’s are $10 at Target), and I personally like to get some that have a good amount of stretch and are figure-flattering. I call those my Baddie Basics.
Pro Tip: Securing your basics in neutral colors first (black, white, grey, browns, cream) will give you even more options. Neutrals go with everything.
Where to buy them
For my regular basics, I like to shop at Target and H&M for basic T’s. I’ve also really been loving my Jamie Jeans from TopShop, I plan to stock up on more during Black Friday. Zara also has great basic tops.
For my Baddie Basics, I really love Zara’s bodysuits and the dresses and jumpsuits from Naked Wardrobe (their stuff is GREAT quality and double lined).
So there you have it sis, the #1 reason that you have nothing to wear. What are some of your favorite basic pieces? Let me know in the comments below!
Stylishly Yours,
Theresa Seyi
