Now that fall has officially begun, I’m starting to see how important it is to have some solid fall basics to help me get the most mileage out of my wardrobe. Fall is my favorite season to dress for, so I’m really excited to wear a lot of the trends that are hot right now. When I started to take out my fall clothes for the year, I realized that 1) I didn’t have as many as I remembered, and 2) I didn’t have enough basics. Thankfully that’s nothing that a little shopping couldn’t fix.
Here are 5 Fall Basics that you need in your closet today sis:
Fall Basic #1: Long Sleeve Basic T’s
A good quality, inexpensive, basic T-shirt is hard to find. My favorite are the kind that have enough stretch in it where they flatter my shape, and are cut well so that I don’t look boxy. I was on the hunt to find some basic long T-shirts that fit the bill, and I started at my usual spot which is H&M. While they do have good quality basic T-shirts (in both long and short sleeves), the color options leave much to be desired.
I decided to check out some other options online, and I came across the fitted long sleeve t-shirts by A New Day. They retail for $10 (and currently it’s 20% off clothing at Target when you use the cartwheel coupon, so they’re $8), and come in a bunch of colors (blues, pinks, neutrals, red, etc). I must have bought at least 10. They’re super comfortable and figure-flattering. I bought both the V-Neck and Crewneck options.
Why you need them
You need basic t’s as foundations for the majority of your outfits, and you can literally wear them with anything and everything. In fact, when you don’t have enough basics, it can feel like you don’t have anything to wear because you don’t have the foundation pieces that you need.
Fall Basic #2: Jeans
When fall rolls around, I like to switch over to darker denim washes, and washes that have a bit of a golden hue to them (they just feel rustic and fall-like to me). Denim is a wardrobe essential no matter what the season, but a good pair of jeans is a fall basic that you can’t afford to forget. It can be hard to find a good pair of jeans, especially if you’re a big booty girl like myself. I opt for jeans that have a lot of stretch in them, so that I don’t have to worry about them losing their shape throughout the day.
My go-to’s were always the denim from H&M Shaping Jean collection, but those are hard to come by nowadays (It looks like they’ve revamped the size chart for them and brought them back, but I haven’t tried them out to confirm). I’ve tried some of the sculpting jeans from Zara as well, and recently ordered some of the Jamie Jeans from TopShop. I’ll report back once I get to try them out.
Why You Need Them
A good pair of non-distressed jeans can take you anywhere from the office (if you work in a casual, or business casual setting) to date night. To get the most mileage out of them it’s really important to make sure that it’s a plain wash, with absolutely no distressing, and that they fit your body really well.
Fall Basic #3: Blazers
Why You Need Them
A good blazer (especially if it’s a long one) can be a great multi-purpose fall basic. It can help you transition some of your summer pieces into early fall (like my outfit above, shoutout to my fit finder for styling me). It can be worn with jeans to the office, or for a night on the town. Also if it’s long enough like I mentioned above, it can also be worn as a blazer dress.
It’s no secret that my favorite blazers are from Zara, because for the price I feel like the quality and tailoring are unmatched. I especially love their double-breasted blazers, because I feel like they look super chic (especially if you go for a monochromatic look like I did here). If you’re looking for good staple blazers for your wardrobe, I ain’t even gon’ hold you: go to Zara. If you’re not sure what you should buy first, I suggest a double-breasted, neutral color blazer, and if possible get one with gold / metallic buttons.
Fall Basic #4: Leather Pants
I love a good (faux) leather pant, and something about them makes me feel sexy. I will keep telling y’all this until you all go out and try a pair on haha. They’re so easy to dress up and down, it’s crazy. If you’re wearing them to the office, pair them with a blazer. Going to a concert or somewhere fun? Wear them with a graphic T and heels. Date night? Add a sexy top. The options are endless.
Why you need them
It’s the texture for me. Adding leather pants to an outfit instead of jeans, instantly elevates your look and make it look like: 1) You put more thought into your fabulous effortless outfit and 2) Like you expensiveeee. Leather pants are a piece that literally comes back in style every fall, so as long as you get a neutral color in a classic style you don’t have to worry about them ever going out of style.
Fall Basic #5: Boots
Chelsea boots. Ankle booties. Thigh-high boots. Knee-high boots. Fall is the season of THE BOOT. I personally love thigh-high boots, and as with all the other fall basics I suggest starting with a neutral color first (like basic black) as they’ll go with anything.
Once you have your neutral basics secured, then you can feel free to venture out into different colors and patterns.
Why you need them
A good pair of shoes can elevate your look, and help change up any outfit. Chelsea and ankle boots would be more appropriate for work settings (like these $129 dupes for the Gucci Black Leather Booties with the Crystal Ankle Strap), and thigh highs for a night out.
