With 2021 just two days away, it’s time to get ready to reset and refresh. I’m working on setting my goals for the new year, and I also like to deep clean ahead of time. It feels like I’m hitting a refresh button on my life before I jump into a new year.
This also includes refreshing my closet.
How To Get Your Closet Ready For The New Year
I have some style-related goals for the new year, but I need to get my closet ready before tackling them. Here are four things that I do to prepare my closet for a new year (or season) and refresh the fabulosity.
1) Clean Out Your Closet
When you’re refreshing your wardrobe, the best place to start is by cleaning out your closet. It’s important to see what you’re working with and make sure that the pieces that you have still work for you.
While I clean out my closet, I get rid of anything that:
- No longer fits well
- Is no longer in good condition
- I don’t like anymore (because hey, it happens lol)
I basically put everything into one of the following piles: keep, save for another season (like putting summer clothes away during the winter), maybe, and let go. Eventually, the maybe pile will have to be divided into the keep, or giveaway piles.
There are a few options for getting rid of things (including selling them on Poshmark). but my favorite thing is to donate my old clothes. Pre-pandemic, I would bring them to H&M to donate in exchange for the 15% off conscious initiative coupon. I think that the program is paused during the pandemic, so now I mainly donate my old clothes to charitable organizations. I
The goal is to make sure that the clothes you love the clothes you have and that they fit you well and are in good condition. Fashion is supposed to be fun, and you want to make sure that you have pieces that suit the style you want.
2) Get Organized
I worked retail for 5 years while I was in college, so I’m no stranger to organizing clothes, haha. While I definitely could stand to upgrade my closet storage and organization (I’ve got my eye on an IKEA Pax Wardrobe System), I do some basic things to help keep me organized.
I have my closet organized by color, type, and occasion. Basically, my closet is pretty small, with a dividing column in the middle. I use that to separate my every day clothes, from my dressier pieces (date night, church clothes, etc). Both sections are organized by type (for example, dresses together, tops, pants, etc.) and by color. It just makes it easier for me to find things, and it’s aesthetically pleasing to my eye.
I also like to keep all of my clothes on velvet hangers (pink to be specific, but I’m just extra like that) so that my clothes keep their shape. You can pick some up in stores like TJMaxx, HomeGoods, or Marshalls and get a good deal. If you’ll be needing a lot of hangers, you might want to consider buying them on Amazon.
3) Secure Your Basics
Do you feel like you don’t have anything to wear? It might be because you don’t have enough basic pieces in your wardrobe. When you have a good amount of basic pieces, it makes it super easy to mix and match stuff in your closet and make more outfits. When everything has details or distinctive designs on them, it’s hard to mix and match them with a lot of other pieces.
For that reason, you want to make sure that you have enough basics, like T-Shirts, Jeans, Nude Heels, Black Heels, A good black purse, A great jacket, Black Leather Pants, etc.
My favorite T-Shirts are about $10 at Target, and they come in a bunch of different colors. With your denim, you want to make sure that you have styles that are a plain wash with no distressing. This way you can dress them up or down easily. I love the Jamie Jeans from TopShop, they fit perfectly over my curves and hold their shape all day long.
4) Get Inspired
Whenever I get bored with my clothes, I know it’s time to get inspired. I also might do a little shopping, but it doesn’t mean that I need to do a complete overhaul. Pinterest is my favorite place to find ideas on how I can style some pieces that I already have, and try some new looks.
I also love to save outfits that I like on Instagram, for inspiration later on. Shopping the “New In” page on my favorite stores websites helps too, as I get to see what’s hot and fresh to spice up my current wardrobe. Sometimes it’s as simple as getting a new top or boots, to shake things up a bit.
