Do you ever feel like you have nothing to wear? Because same. I quickly learned that when I feel this way, it’s probably because I don’t have enough basics in my closet. Here’s the tea though sis, basics don’t have to be basic. This is the principle that I have built my elevated capsule wardrobe on.
A capsule wardrobe is simply a collection of pieces that you can mix and match to make outfits. Some people set a number for how many pieces they want to have and stick to that. My approach is to have a collection of pieces that work well together and elevate any outfit style them with.
I put together a story pin video guide on Pinterest, that walks you through all of my key pieces in my elevated capsule wardrobe (with styling tips!). In this post, I’m also going to share links and suggestions for pieces for your shopping trip.
The cheat code
It’s important to have plain pieces in neutral colors, this way; you can mix and match them with everything. You want to make sure you have pieces that fit well and are of good quality. To elevate your look, you can also play with textures like satin and faux leather. Faux leather is my favorite quick and easy go-to, which makes my outfits look more expensive.
Fit, versatility, and hints of texture is the cheat code.
You’re welcome.
What You Need In Your Elevated Capsule Wardrobe
Bodysuits
I love a good bodysuit because it makes me feel super snatched. You can throw them on with any bottoms and have a nice smooth look. In my story pin, I wore these deep v plunge bodysuits from SHEin. Also, Zara is a really great place to buy affordable and good-quality bodysuits!
Little Black Dress
My favorite kind of LBD’s are plain and body-conscious, the length is a personal choice. Naked wardrobe is my favorite place to buy these kinds of dresses. If you need something for a business environment, you can try a sheath dress.
Basic T’s
Basic T’s are ESSENTIAL in your closet. My favorites are from Target and H&M.
Make sure that you have your naturals like black, white, and grey as they’re most versatile.
Black Pants
A good pair of black pants can be hard to find. My favorites are this pair from H&M’s business wear collection (Modern Classic). They’re black skinny pants that style-wise look like jeans but aren’t denim. They’re very stretchy, so you may want to size them down.
Denim Shirt
A denim shirt is a cute causal piece, that you can use to switch up any outfit. I like to do denim on denim sometimes, or style it with leather pants. You can use it to create a cute overall casual look, or a cute dressy casual look. Options. WELUV2CIT.
Blazer
I love a good blazer. My favorite one is this black faux leather blazer from Zara.
It can be styled with ANYTHING. Leather shorts like in this outfit, denim shorts, jeans, a leather skirt, over a dress, etc.
If your blazer is long enough, it can also double as a dress!
Jeans
A good pair of jeans can be hard to find. As a woman with a slightly curvier shape, I struggle to find some that fit over my thighs and butt and don’t gap at the waist. I searched high and low, and the Jamie Jeans from TopShop have never failed me. They also don’t lose their shape throughout the day.
For the most versatility, you want to get jeans that are plain with no distressing or holes.
Trench
A trench is a classy way to elevate any look, as it can dress up any outfit.
Faux leather trenches are my absolute favorite, and places like Zara and Missguided are great places to find them.
A trench with interesting details, like this one with faux leather insets can still be versatile. As long as the color palette is still neutral.
Faux Leather Pants
Everybody should own a pair of faux leather pants. I feel like they not only elevate your look but make any outfit a little sexy too. Definitely start with a pair in basic black before moving on to other colors for maximum versatility.
Satin Blouse
A satin blouse is a nice way to add a luxurious touch to any outfit. Bonus points if you have one with a fun print. I like to tie mine up, or tuck them in. If they’re longer, I also style them as shirt dresses. My favorite place to buy satin blouses is Zara.
Leather Jacket
A leather jacket is an outerwear essential. You can throw it on with literally any outfit, and head out the door.
Faux Fur Jacket
Faux fur is my all-time favorite bad and bougie staple. I feel like everybody needs to have a good basic black faux fur jacket, as it’s the most versatile. I personally have faux furs in a bunch of different bold colors as well, but starting off with black or brown offers the most versatility.
Gold Accessories
Gold accessories add a luxe touch to any outfit you style them with. A mini gold purse, gold jewelry, even down to gold buttons on your clothing. Gold metallic evening sandals are also a staple for me, and a must-have for an elevated capsule wardrobe.
Black Heels
Black heels can be styled with anything. My preference is a pair with a patent finish because I feel like the shine dresses things up. Make sure you get a heel height that you can walk comfortably in!
