I recently got a sew in, and I got a lot of my maintenance and preparation essentials on Amazon. I saved them all here in my “Sew In SZN” list on my Amazon Storefront. Stay tuned for my first impressions YouTube video on the hair I had installed. Here are some of the items I’ve been using to prep the hair, dye the hair, blend my hair with sew in, and style it!
To Wash My Bundles
I purchased travel-sized versions of the TRESemmé rich moisture shampoo and conditioner to wash my bundles. These products were recommended by Yummy Hair Extensions when I purchased a bundle of their 613 Raw Cambodian Wavy Hair. I used it to wash all my bundles before my sew in, and they felt soft and smelled great.
The regular-sized versions of these products are pretty affordable, I opted for travel-sized because I plan to have my maintenance done at the salon.
To Protect My Hair Under My Sew In
My stylist used a protective net under my sew in to reduce tension on my hair. This way the net gets sewn down to your braids, and the hair gets sewn onto the net.
To Help My Hair Blend With My Sew In
The TikTok girlies influenced me to do a clear hair dye rinse on my hair to add shine. I’ve heard that this can also help your hair blend better with your extensions. I used the Clairol Beautiful Collection Moisturizing Hair Color in Clear. My mom has used one of the pigmented shades for years to dye her hair at home, so I felt comfortable with this product line.
After using the clear hair dye and getting my hair done, I noticed my hair looks smoother and has more of a subtle sheen than when I had my last silk press.
I also heard about the Redken Spray Wax on TikTok thanks to Mikai McDermontt, which she mentioned can help tame flyaways. My stylist did a great job with blending my hair, but I got this ahead of time just in case I had some flyaway hairs. I’ll report back when I test it out.
To Dye My Faux Highlights
If you saw some of my TikTok or Instagram videos, then you know I added faux highlights to my sew in. I wanted an overall 1B/613/27 blend. So I dyed half of my 613 Yummy Extensions bundle strawberry blonde with Adore Honey Brown and KISS Tintation Rose Gold hair dyes. I used the watercolor method to do this, check out my tutorial on it here.
To Prevent Shedding
Speaking of that 613 bundle, I also sealed the wefts using Fray Check to prevent shedding once it was cut. I ain’t gon’ hold you, it’s cheaper at Walmart, or your local craft stores (just look in the fabric section).
To Curl My Hair
The T3 Curling Iron (1.25″ Barrel with the Extra Long Barrel) was one of my Christmas gifts, and I can’t wait to use it to curl my hair. I got my hair curled at the salon, but I plan to use the T3 Curling Iron when I need a touch up in between sew in maintenance appointments.
I also have some gold hair clips on deck to help the curls set. For hold I have some Sebastian Shaper hairspray, and satin flexi rods to help me maintain my curls overnight.
I have a few heat protectants on deck, and the one I’m planning to use most is the Amkia Blockade Heat Defense Serum.
To Straighten My Hair
To straighten my hair, I have the Barbie X Chi ceramic flat iron which I like. I use carbon combs when I straighten my hair using the comb and chase method.
